sorry to say, but what you show is just a reflection of the planes.
in your tuts renderings the object is not lit by the plane as your description and tut says.
textures illuminating other objects is limited to GI rendering, which is not the case here.
    peace

Thanks for pointing that out. I am learning like everyone else out there.

Maybe you could make a tutorial on this to help everyone out including me?

When you do I would defiantly link to it.

In short: just turn on GI in the render settings. (auto light will turn off then automatically)
then the plane can light up the environment. just test it, you´ll see the difference.
there is a cool tutorial about stuff you´r trying to show. http://vimeo.com/15571481
since it does not involve GI rendering it actually needs real lights, so it kind of fakes this effect.
in your case you would need an “area light” placed on the plane.

great tutorial, i have one Q. i did it and all works great. I went a step further and added a black reflective plain, for a reflective effect. However the top illuminated plain still appear in the render. I play with the composting tag, but it it either in the render or off completely. How do i get rid of the light plain reflection on bottom plain
